Communication Wk 2

I chose to watch the show Sleepy Hollow.  I don’t like a lot of horror based movies or shows but had been hearing good things about it and decided to use this opportunity to watch it.  I first watched it with the sound off, confused by what was happening.  The two main characters seemed to be puzzled and confused a lot according to their facial expressions.  It seemed as though they were trying to solve a problem that involved another character who the one had compassion and feelings for.  After turning the sound on, I found my assumptions about the facial expressions to be right.  The two girl characters were trying to save the male figure by solving an old puzzle.  The one female character, I believe her name was Abigail, had strong feelings about the male character but only in a friendship big brother sort of way.  My assumptions were pretty accurate based on what the faces of the characters portrayed.  Had it been a less popular show or one that had just started, the concept and assumptions that I had would had been way off.  I found the nonverbal cues the characters were using such as body language and facial expressions to help tell the plot very easily.  Every seemed to be written on their faces.

  1. Hello Jacqueline: I have not seen the show myself. I agree with you that sometimes we can make accurate assumptions based on their facial expressions and body language. It is interesting now taking this course I am more aware of other people's communication styles and there are many of them.

  2. I don't know about you Jacqueline but this assignment was hard for me. I couldn't stand watching the characters and not hearing what was being said. My assumptions were hit and miss, but I was really off base with what I thought was going on. The facial expression do give you clues to what the person is thinking or saying. And then I tried to read lips. Of course I didn't succeed. Now, I have a new respect for people who are deaf and can read lips without any problems.

  3. Jacqueline,
It is interesting that we see more of behaviors, feelings and stature by observing body language. It is interesting that even with the sound off we still are pretty right on to what is going on. I wonder if this also has to do with the nature of media and the culture we are a part of ..?
    Thanks, Cassie

  4. Jacqueline,

It was so interesting for me to see how we can accurately tell what is happening in a TV show without the sound turned on. I think it serves as an excellent reminder to be cognizant of our nonverbal communication such as facial expressions and kinesics. We communicate with so much more than words!

    Thanks for the post!

    Best,
    Parker

  5. Hi Jacqueline,
This assignment has me observing nonverbal communication more. I'm more aware of body language and facial expressions. It was pretty easy to figure out what was happening on the show I observed. I didn't think it would be. Thanks for sharing.

  6. Hi, I also found that many of my assumptions about the show I watched were also true. I think that facial expressions play a huge role in communication! I also think it shows that we are doing well with our own communication skills in the fact that our assumptions were right! Of course I believe you can never learn too much about communication but at least we are on the right track! :)
